The Matrix of Class and Caste in India

Modern India still cripples with the age old Caste System. Caste system is hereditary and has its roots in the four verna system of medieval India. In past, caste system primarily decided the types of occupation or the occupational class. This paper investigates whether the caste is still playing a role in deciding the kind of occupation one gets. In the process, it develops a caste-class intermix index and examine its trend over the last 10 years (1996-2006).
